Today recent figures report that one in three couples end up either separated, or divorced and this leads to numerous amounts of single parents. This may be the underlying cause of why there has been a growing number of children who suffer with Generalized Anxiety Disorders.
It is a fact that single parents in general do perform a good task with regard to bringing up children when they are single, however it can not replace the support of both parents.
Children are very sensitive and can be easily influenced when they are growing up. So when children witness the breakup of a marriage or other traumatic events the child can be deeply affected and the emotional scars left behind may lead to Generalized Anxiety Disorders.
Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by persistent worry about major or minor problems and when anxiety is a persistent problem that interferes with daily activities such as work, school or sleep. It can disrupt relationships and enjoyment of life, and over time it can lead to health problems.
In some cases, GAD can develop into several different types of mental health condition that requires treatment. Such as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and panic disorders.
Children who are suffering from an anxiety disorder may become extra sensitive to stress and have low self-esteem. They may express irrational fears of the future or start to cry easily. These are all good indications that the child is suffering with daily stress and anxiety poorly.
If a child has experienced an anxiety attack they will begin to fear future attacks. Which will, eventually, increase the amount of anxiety and stress, and cause additional attacks.
Until recently the medical profession has dismissed symptoms of GAD in children as just the result of an over protective mother or an absent father. However, as the number of children suffering from GAD increase, the medical professionals are spending more time and money studying the problem and looking for solutions.
Thus far, the only treatments made available are those prescribed for adults, therapy and medication. However, new self-help techniques have recently proven to dramatically reduce anxiety in children, as well as, adults without the use of medication, therapy, or hypnosis. It is a technique of Anti-Anxiety Training that teaches the child to recognize the early signs of an episode or attack and take steps to stop them before they grow into a full-blown anxiety attack.
